Locals

Colorful local characters definitely add to the feel and flavor of an area. I was just introduced to "Freddie", whose corner of the park I happened to work from today. He's a nice fellow; seems to value honesty and helping people, and just like most homeless people loves to talk for hours and hours. But, who can deny the value of a familiar friendly face?

Thinking of street people always reminds me of my friend Duke from the Cliff House. We used to chat pretty much everyday, usually as I was heading home for the night. He was a Vietnam vet who had been through some crazy shit. He had an interesting, and surprisingly conservative perspective. He thought that homeless people were a scourge on our planet and despised them despite being one. Our relationship was a strange one, but meaningful and insightful all the same.

Forming connections with as many different people as possible, is one of my life-long goals. With it comes a fulfillment and a better understanding of what it means to be a human.
